Retrospelsmusik från 80- och 90-talet
Just nu sveper en retrovåg över världen och det har kommit miniversioner av gamla klassiska spelkonsoler som NES, SNES, Sega Mega Drive och den första generationens Playstation. Till och med den gamla hemdatorn Commodore 64 har kommit i en ”C64 Mini”-version. De som växte upp under 80- och 90-talen har nu nämligen blivit vuxna och därmed köpstarka grupper som lockas av nostalgin i dessa gamla retromaskiner.
Inte minst musiken från de gamla dator- och tv-spelen får de nostalgiska minnena att komma tillbaka. På grund av de tekniska begränsningarna i 80-talets spelmaskiner med 8-bitarsprocessorer bestod musiken ofta av syntetiskt ”blippbloppande”.
Commodore 64
En maskin som dock utmärkte sig för att ha ett ovanligt avancerat ljudchipp för sin tid var hemdatorn Commodore 64. Dess ljudchipp heter SID (Sound Interface Device) och har både ringmodulator, kuvertgenerator och inställbara ljudfilter som kunde appliceras på alla tre ljudkanaler. Det gav i praktiken upphov till att C64:an fick ett väldigt karaktäristiskt sound på sin musik, som lätt kunde skiljas från till exempel Nintendos 8-bitarskonsol NES. En virtuell fjärde kanal gick också att använda för digitala 4-bitssamplingar, genom att utnyttja en designmiss i hårdvaran.
Idag är det inte många som använder dessa gamla maskiner i originalutförande, men det finns gott om emulatorer för att ladda in sina gamla favoritspel från barndomen och bli nostalgisk till musiken. Det finns både emulatorer och särskilda musikspelare som kan spela musiken från gamla retrospel att ladda ner till mobilen så man kan lyssna på låtarna ute i hängmattan. Att ha en powerbank nära till hands kan nog vara en god idé också, då det kan dra en del på batteriet att emulera de gamla spelmaskinerna.
Amigan och ProTracker
När hemdatorn Amiga 500 kom 1987 var den långt före konkurrenterna på det som senare kom att kallas multimedia, det vill säga audio och video. Den hade fyra ljudkanaler i stereo och kunde visa upp till 4096 färger samtidigt på skärmen.
Det var även lätt att själv komponera musik på Amigan via gratisprogram som ProTracker och det cirkulerade många hemgjorda låtar av varierande kvalitet. Köpte man en sampler till sin Amiga kunde man dessutom själv spela in alla möjliga ljud från radio, tv, musikinstrument eller sin egen röst. Idag är det inte lika märkvärdigt då även de enklaste datorerna har ljudkort med ingångar för mikrofon och ”line in”.
Vissa skickliga Amigamusiker lyckades skriva egna musikrutiner som möjliggjorde upp till sju ljudkanaler, trots att Amigan bara hade hårdvarustöd för fyra. Ett exempel på detta kan höras i musiken till shoot ’em up–spelet Turrican II, som tysken Chris Hühlsbeck har komponerat. Det var på Amigan som han och många andra spelmusiker startade sin karriär. Ett annat exempel är Olof Gustafsson, som var en av grundmedlemmarna i Digital Illusions (sedermera DICE). Olof komponerade musiken till alla deras flipperspel, Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies och Pinball Illusions, som släpptes till Amigan under 90-talet.
