Det finns mängder av musikformer och genrer. Man kan även tydligt märka kulturella drag inom olika områden, exempelvis afroamerikansk musik, arabiskt musik, indisk musik, kinesisk musik, gamelanmusik och så vidare. Dessutom finns massor av genrer, till exempel pop, rock, folkmusik, dansband, hiphop och metal, för att nämna några.
Tack vare arkeologiska fynd som tyder på redskap som använts som instrument har man kunnat öka sin kunskap om musikintresset i förhistorisk tid. Man har även hittat spännande avbildningar av musicerande människor i olika sammanhang. I både Europa och Östasien har man hittat benflöjter. De äldsta är så gamla som 35 000 år. Dessa har påträffats i en grotta i Tyskland.
Vad man har kommit fram till, genom fynd och studier, verkar musiken ha spelat en stor roll i de tidigaste bekanta högkulturerna. Bland annat har musiken spelat en viktig roll i den religiösa kulturen, och det har det fortsatt med genom alla tider. Än idag har musik i olika former en stor betydelse inom religionen och religiösa riter. Det antika Grekland ligger till grund för själva musikbegreppet, och det är också därifrån man hittat det första kända källmaterialet för autonom tonkonst. En hel del av den nutida musikterminologin härstammar från just det antika Grekland.
Den västerländska konstmusiken kan man spåra tillbaka till 800-talet efter Kristus och framåt. Det är bland annat bevarade dokument med noter som har gett oss en kunskap och förståelse för den dåtida musiken.
